Research Programs
Clinical Research Program
a. Fluid Resuscitation
- Crystalloid versus Hydroxy-Ethyl Starch Trials (CHEST) - This is new initiative which aims to provide the best research evidence to intensive care physicians globally regarding the use of new semi-synthetic colloids.
- Saline versus Albumin Fluid Evaluation Study (SAFE) - The SAFE study was a land-mark study that changed the way clinical research is conducted in critical care. the SAFE investigated the effects of fluid resuscitation with 4% human albumin solution or normal saline solution on all cause mortality of intensive care unit patients. The data collected is further being used to highlight areas where patient outcome maybe improved through sub-study analyses.
- Saline vs. Albumin Fluid Evaluation Translation of Research Into Practice Study - SAFE TRIPS - This is an international prospective observational study to examine fluid resuscitation practice in intensive care unit (ICU) patients across a number of high and low-middle income countries.
b. Glucose Control
- Normoglycaemia in Intensive Care Evaluation and Survival Using Glucose Algorithm Regulation (NICE SUGAR) - The primary aim of the NICE study was to compare two blood glucose targets on all cause mortality in intensive care unit (ICU) patients.
- Intensive Insulin Therapy Trialists’ Collaboration (IIT-TC) - This is a multi-national collaborative project which aims to bring together international clinical data on intensive glucose control to conduct a meta-analysis.
c. Point Prevalence Program
- This is a collaborative project between Australian & New Zealand Intensive Care Society (ANZICS) Clinical Trials Group and the Critical Care & Trauma division. This programs aims to streamline future studies in intensive care in Australia and New Zealand and highlight new areas of research.
Health Services Research Program
The Critical Care & Trauma division is working towards establishing collaborative projects in health services research to provide more evidence for improving health systems in Australia and globally.
Health Economics Research Program
The Critical Care & Trauma division aims to conduct health economics studies and engage in studies that improve the ability to enact change in health systems in Australia and internationally.
